Mental Health Considerations in the Cancer Journey: Why Emotional Wellness Matters

A cancer diagnosis is life-altering—emotionally, physically, and spiritually. It’s no surprise that more than one-third of cancer patients meet the criteria for a diagnosable mental health condition such as depression, anxiety, or adjustment disorder. While feelings of sadness, fear, and worry are natural responses to such a diagnosis, persistent and debilitating mental health symptoms should never be minimized or merely tolerated.

Mental Health and Survival: More Than Just Coping

Research continues to reveal what many healthcare professionals have long suspected: mental health plays a significant role not only in quality of life, but also in physical outcomes. Engaging in mental health treatment has been linked to longer survival rates in cancer patients. When we address the emotional toll of cancer with intention and care, we support the body’s capacity to heal and respond to treatment.

This connection isn’t coincidental. The mind-body relationship is deeply intertwined. Chronic stress and unmanaged emotional distress can negatively impact immune function, inflammation, and even the body’s ability to repair itself. At She Soars Psychiatry, LLC, we emphasize the bidirectional relationship between mental wellness and physical healing, especially during and after cancer treatment.

Emotional awareness and furthermore, sharing our feelings can be hard for many of us especially if we grew up in a family or cultural system that did not provide support or a safe container to do so. A cancer diagnosis has a way of bringing vulnerabilities and fears to the surface. This can be uncomfortable, but may also be an opportunity for deeper connection, self-discovery, and a broadening of our social support system.

A Holistic Lens for Healing

At She Soars Psychiatry, we believe healing involves more than treating symptoms. Emotional wellness during the cancer journey requires a holistic lens—one that respects the complexity of each person’s psychological, physiological, and spiritual experience. Cancer impacts every facet of life, so our response must be equally comprehensive

Whether a person’s newly diagnosed, in the midst of treatment, or navigating survivorship, consider the following practices to support your emotional well-being:

  • Embrace Community: Surround yourself with people who uplift and support you—whether it’s family, friends, a support group, or a therapist. Connection can be a powerful source of resilience.
  • Practice Gratitude and Mindfulness: Even small moments of presence and gratitude can shift your perspective and bring calm during chaos.
  • Establish Routines Around Self-Care: Nourish your body, schedule intentional exercise when permitted, prioritize rest, and make space for the rituals that ground you.
  • Prioritize Time for Lightness and Joy: Laughter, creativity, and play are not luxuries—they are essential parts of healing and how you fill your cup.
  • Honor Your Boundaries: Give yourself permission to say no, ask for help, and protect your energy.
  • Connect to Meaning: Whether through spirituality, nature, service, or reflection, connect with what gives your life purpose and direction.

Cancer is a deeply personal journey—but you don’t have to walk it alone, and you don’t have to accept emotional suffering as an inevitable part of the process. At She Soars Psychiatry, we are here to walk alongside you, offering compassionate, integrative mental health support rooted in the intersections of science and hope.
